Profile<\/STRONG>

Chelsea FC's Claude Makelele has redefined the position of the deep-lying defensive midfielder to the extent that in England it is simply referred to as 'the Makelele role'. Now 35, he continues to provide a similar service for his country.

First capped in 1995, he did not become a regular for France until the 2000\/01 season following a move to Real Madrid CF.

His first competitive appearance for the senior national side came seven years after his debut – in the 2-0 defeat by Denmark at the 2002 FIFA World Cup that ended France's trophy defence.

Made three appearances at UEFA EURO 2004 and all seven at the 2006 World Cup, winning his 50th cap in the final.

Quit the international stage after UEFA EURO 2004 but returned a year later; also on the verge of retiring in 2006 but persuaded to stay on.

A French champion with FC Nantes Atlantique in 1994\/95, he won the Primera División twice and the 2001\/02 UEFA Champions League at Real Madrid.

Several more trophies have followed since he joined Chelsea in 2003 – two league titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup.
