National team

Van Bommel has proved a huge asset to the Netherlands in recent times. He got a first taste of international action on October 2000 as the Dutch beat Cyprus 4-0, but had to watch the 2002 FIFA World Cup from home as the Netherlands missed out on qualification.

UEFA EURO 2004? qualifying

Van Bommel played in the opening seven Group 3 qualifiers, scoring the winning goal against Moldova with five minutes remaining in Tiraspol. Groin surgery, however, ruled him out of both legs of the play-off success against Scotland.

Club

Van Bommel had developed into arguably the Eredivisie's foremost midfield player during a seven-year spell at SC Fortuna Sittard, his first professional club, after breaking through at RKVV Maasbracht in his hometown. His crowning glory was supposed to be the Dutch Cup final of 1999, only for suspension to deny him a rousing farewell.

1999: Van Bommel was a league champion in his first season at the Philips stadium, scoring six goals in 33 matches. He was also one of the key reasons why they successfully defended it, fittingly scoring the only goal in the win against SC Cambuur Leeuwarden which clinched the title. Van Bommel showed two sides of his game in the second leg of the 2002 UEFA Cup quarter-final against Feyenoord: scoring a trademark goal from outside the penalty area and also being sent off.

2002\/03: Despite the inconvenience of a groin injury midway through the season, Van Bommel was a driving force in PSV's march to the title, his third at the club. He scored nine goals from central midfield in 28 matches.

Bert van Marwijk is Van Bommel's father-in-law.
