Profile

One of only five players in Romania's squad with major tournament experience, Cosmin Contra has played for six different clubs since UEFA EURO 2000, spending the past three seasons in Spain with Getafe CF. An indefatigable right-back, he is always to support the attack with his overlapping runs and accurate crosses.

A native of Timisoara, he was relegated and promoted with FC Politehnica 1921 Ştiinţa Timişoara in his first two seasons; joined FC Dinamo 1948 Bucureşti, where he remained, trophyless, until 1999.

Moved to Spain, where he became a major hit with Deportivo Alavés, notably in helping the little-known club to the 2000/01 UEFA Cup final in their first season of European participation; scored three goals and was outstanding in dramatic final v Liverpool FC (4-5).

Had spells at AC Milan, Club Atlético de Madrid, West Bromwich Albion FC and Poli Timişoara, all without silverware, before joining Getafe in 2005.

Another fine UEFA Cup campaign with Getafe in 2007/08; scored in both legs of quarter-final v FC Bayern München before last-gasp elimination; beaten finalist with Getafe two years running in Copa del Rey.

Regular for Romania over past decade; missed latter stages of UEFA EURO 2008 qualification due to injury.
